DARIEN, IL – Darien has received complaints about signs in a local neighborhood, but officials say they can do nothing about them.

At Monday's City Council meeting, Ward 3 Alderman Joe Kenny said signs were put up on private property in the Darien Club subdivision that have upset some residents.

"It would basically violate their constitutional rights for us to do anything," Kenny said. "We just told the people we can't do anything about it."

He said the neighborhood's homeowners association may have rules to deal with such situations.

Mayor Joseph Marchese said he also received a message about the issue. He agreed with Kenny's reasoning.

"There was nothing obscene about (the signs)," Marchese said. "They were just bothersome to some of the people in that area."

Neither Kenny nor Marchese described the signs.

Patch has filed a public records request for the complaints.
