Cigarette Theft, 'Under-Scanning': Darien Police
Nearly $6,000 in cigarettes were stolen in early morning store burglary, report says.
DARIEN, IL — Darien police have responded to a store burglary, "under-scanning" at Walmart and other thefts in recent days. Here is information from the latest Darien police reports:
- Darien Tobacco, Wine & Liquors, 7516 Cass Ave., was burglarized about 4 a.m. July 17. When officers responded to an alarm, they found the glass shattered out of the front door. Surveillance video showed three suspects breaking the glass with a brick, entering the business and removing cartons of cigarettes. The loss was $5,928 for the cigarettes and $600 in repairs to the door.
- Matthew Waszak, 33, of Darien, was arrested about 9:30 a.m. July 15 at Clarendon Hills and Plainfield roads on charges of DUI and improper lane usage. He was released and given a date to appear in court.
- A 60-year-old man from Naperville was seen "under-scanning" at the self-checkout at 2:30 p.m. July 16 at Walmart, 2189 75th St. The report did not indicate whether charges had been filed against the man.
- Two locked bicycles valued at $348 were removed between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. July 16 from a bike rack near a building in the 1400 block of Lakeview Drive.
- License plates were stolen from a work van between July 16 and July 19 in an alley near Q-Bar, 8109 Cass Ave.
