See Darien Videos: A Birthday Parade Like No Other

Cops, music, Mickey Mouse, confetti and Jeep group are all a part of festivities.

DARIEN, IL — Yes, birthday car parades have been held around the country in this time of pandemic. Then there was the one on Darien Club Drive early Monday evening.

It was the first birthday for Sebastian, the son of Danny Carnet and Sal Intile of Darien. They blasted dance music, sprayed confetti and even got the police and fire departments to take part in the procession. And Mickey Mouse, too. The Disney character got out of a car and visited with the parents and their 1-year-old.

Probably more than 100 cars participated in the parade, including members of a Jeep club. Neighbors watched, with one saying she wanted to dance. Some wore face masks; others did not. Social distancing? Well, for the most part.

The Rev. Mike O'Keefe of Darien's Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church blessed those in the cars passing by. The masked priest said he has done his share of blessings at birthday parties, but this was his first time doing so pandemic-style.
