Darien Groceries Extend Hours for Seniors
Special hours designated for elderly and other vulnerable populations. Lions plan to help with shopping.
DARIEN, IL — Some Darien businesses are holding special hours for elderly and vulnerable populations as they deal with the coronavirus, according to a city news release.
Darien’s Jewel, 7329 S Cass Ave., will be open from 7 to 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays for senior citizens. Brookhaven Marketplace will open early at 6:30 a.m. starting Monday for seniors to do their shopping. Brookhaven also takes online and phone orders and offers curbside pickup.
At the request of Mayor Joseph Marchese, the Darien Lions Club will also help seniors with shopping and delivering groceries, according to the city news release. Beginning Monday, seniors can place orders by calling Steve Wernecke at 708-287-7333 on Monday afternoons between 1 and 3 p.m or emailing stevenwernecke@comcast.net.

Wernecke will then call the participating Lions, give them orders and the addresses, and they will go out on Tuesday morning to pick up the orders and deliver them. Limit orders to $30 and use cash; credit cards payments will not be accepted.
Remember that all items and brands may not be available. If you have any questions, call City Hall at 630-852-5000. If the need increases, the Lions will add a second delivery day (Thursday) with orders coming in on Wednesday afternoon, according to the release.
