Darien Has Lower Virus Case Rate Than Neighbors

Town sees eight new coronavirus cases in the last week.

DARIEN, IL — Darien experienced an increase of eight new coronavirus cases over the last week, with a total of 155 as of Sunday, according to DuPage County Health Department figures. The number of deaths jumped by two in the last week, for a total of six.

Darien's rate of increase last week, which amounted to 5 percent, was about the same as DuPage County as a whole. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population and 1.5 percent of the coronavirus cases.

As of Sunday, Darien had 7.2 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than its neighbors. The figure compares to 7.6 in Western Springs, 7.9 in La Grange Park, 8.5 in Clarendon Hills, 9.6 in Elmhurst, 11 in DuPage County, 11.7 in Burr Ridge, 13.3 in Hinsdale, 15.8 in suburban Cook County and 16.5 in La Grange.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 161,575, up 5 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 7,295 state residents.

Nationally, 3.8 million people have caught the virus and 139,659 have died from it.
