Darien Holiday Events Light Up the Season

Darien hosts a holiday lights contest, a lights tour, a tree lighting ceremony and holiday light recycling.

The City of Darien hosts several holiday light-themed events to brighten the chilly season.

Holiday Lights Decorating Contest

Darien residents can compete in the annual Holiday Lights Decorating Contest for a chance to win prizes. Friends and neighbors have until Dec. 8 to nominate houses with extra special decorations. Winners will be announced Dec. 15 at the City Council meeting. First prize is $200, second is $100, third receives $50 and fourth and fifth places get $25. To nominate your own home or someone else’s home, call Diane at (630) 353-8102 or email dnoverini@darienil.gov.

Holiday Lights Tour

School busses will drive through Darien on Dec. 22 in a tour of the holiday lights winners. The tour is free, and refreshments will be provided. Reservations are first-come, first serve. To make a reservation, call City Hall at 630-852-5000.

Historical Society Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony

All are invited to the Darien Historical Society’s Tree Lighting on Dec. 7. The lighting will take place at Old lace Schoolhouse & Museum at 4 p.m, and the event will include Christmas carols, Santa visits and indoor refreshments.

Holiday Lights Recycling

Don’t throw out those tangled or broken holiday lights yet. Darien has partnered with Elgin Recycling for free holiday light recycling. Bring lights to the Darien Police Department lobby on Plainfield Road, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The recycling program takes place from now to Feb. 8. Lights of all colors and strand lengths will be accepted, including mini-lights (Italian lights), C7 lights, C9 lights, rope lights, LED lights, and extension cords. (no CFLs).
