DARIEN, IL – Darien Mayor Joseph Marchese said this week he was recovering from a health issue.

At Monday's City Council meeting, Marchese did not detail his situation. He thanked people for sending him "beautiful cards" over the last couple of weeks.

"It hasn't been the easiest sleeping in a recliner every night. It's not a lot of fun," Marchese told the council. "I wanted to thank people for their well wishes and prayers. I'm recuperating, and I'm doing well."

In his weekly statement Thursday, Marchese said, "After two weeks of recuperating from surgery, I returned to city hall on Monday to resume my work as Darien’s Mayor. During the two weeks following surgery, I was able to participate in several Zoom conferences and checked and responded to my daily email messages."

Marchese, who became mayor in 2019, celebrated his 73rd birthday last month.
