Darien Names 2022 Citizen Of The Year

The honored resident has given of his time to a number of local causes.

DARIEN, IL — A Darien resident who has given his time to a number of local causes over the years was named last week as the community's 2022 Citizen of the Year.

Lou Mallers moved to Darien with his wife, Carol, and son, Jeff, in 1989. The city's Citizen of the Year Committee selected him for the top honor.

Mallers is vice president of business development at Compass Mortgage.

He joined the Lions Club in 1990. He has served on a variety of committees that help Darien, including those for the Fourth of July Parade, Darien Fest, the Children's Halloween Party, Christmas Toy and Meal Delivery, and the annual Candy Day drive.

Mallers, who has served on the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Council as the service commissioner, is responsible for the St. Vincent de Paul clothing drive, holiday food and toy collections, food pantry and services to the homeless.

He has been a member of the city's Planning and Zoning Commission for the last decade. He also is a member of the city's Economic Development Committee.

"No matter where you turn, there is Lou rolling up his sleeves working hard to better our community," a city statement said.
