Darien Renews Call For Sterigenics Shutdown

The city is asking the Illinois Attorney General to seek an order requiring the shut down of Sterigenics.

DARIEN, IL — Darien has again renewed its call for Willowbrook-based facility, Sterigenics to cease operations. The city sent a letter on Dec. 13 to the Illinois Attorney General's Office and the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office asking them to seek an order requiring the shut down of Sterigenics until it is proven the air quality is safe.

The letter is signed by Mayor Kathleen Weaver and she states, "Due to the discrepancies and inconsistenices of the initial ethylene oxide air monitoring test results, the level of fear has increased in the people near the Sterigenics facility."

Most recently, the IEPA sampled private water spigots and faucets near Sterigenics to test for any ethylene oxide and ethylene glycol in groundwater.
