Darien Sees 17% Hike In Virus Cases: Health Department

Last week's increase is lower than the two previous weeks.

DARIEN, IL — Darien saw a 17 percent rise in the total number of coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the DuPage County Health Department. That's lower than the two previous weeks' increases — 18 percent and 24 percent.

As of Sunday, the number of cases in Darien was 761, up 108 from a week before. The number of deaths from the coronavirus rose by one last week, for a total of nine since the pandemic's start, according to the health department.

The number of those who have recovered is unavailable.

Darien's rate of increase of 17 percent was higher than DuPage County as a whole, which was 15 percent. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population, but only 2 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload.

As of Sunday, Darien had 35.2 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than most of its neighbors. The figure compares to 32.9 in La Grange Park, 36.4 in Western Springs, 38 in Hinsdale, 38.6 in Clarendon Hills, 41.6 in Elmhurst and DuPage County, 46.3 in suburban Cook County, 47 in Burr Ridge and 50.4 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 656,298, up 14.4 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 11,056 state residents.

Nationally, 12 million people have caught the virus, up 11.1 percent from the week before. A total of 255,076 people have died from the virus in the United States.
