Darien Sees Biggest Weekly Virus Hike In More Than Month

Local deaths remain the same as the previous week, figures show.

DARIEN, IL — Darien saw the biggest percentage increase in its coronavirus caseload in more than a month, according to figures from the DuPage County Health Department.

As of Sunday, the caseload rose by 29 in the previous week, to 354. That represented a 9 percent increase. The number of those who are considered recovered is unavailable.

The number of local deaths from the coronavirus was eight as of Sunday, the same as the previous week, according to the health department.

Darien's rate of increase of 9 percent was higher than DuPage County as a whole, which saw its caseload rise by 6 percent in the last week. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population, but only 1.8 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload.

As of Sunday, Darien had 16.3 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than most of its neighbors. The figure compares to 16.2 in La Grange Park, 19.5 in Western Springs, 20.9 in Clarendon Hills and DuPage County, 21.9 in Elmhurst, 23.5 in Hinsdale, 26 in suburban Cook County, 26.5 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands) and 27.5 in Burr Ridge.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 319,150, up 6 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 8,984 state residents.

Nationally, 7.7 million people have caught the virus, up 5 percent from the week before. A total of 213,614 people have died from the virus in the United States.
