Darien Standoff: Suspect With Gun Arrested, Cops Say

A distraught father called police about his son, who threatened him with a gun, authorities said.

DARIEN, IL — A man with a gun was taken into custody overnight Sunday in Darien after several hours of negotiations, police said.

About 9 p.m., a distraught father contacted an officer at the Darien Police Department and reported that his son pointed a gun at him and threatened him, Police Chief Greg Thomas said in an email to Patch.

The incident happened in the 7500 block of Grant Street, where the father lives, police said. It was a block away from the intersection of 75th Street and Cass Avenue.

After interviewing the father, officers went to the house. Following several failed attempts to speak with the son on the phone, an interagency SWAT team was activated, Thomas said. After several hours of talks, officers entered the house and took the son into custody.

The son, whose name was not released, was charged with domestic battery, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and resisting arrest, Thomas said. Police did not provide the suspect's name.

The SWAT group is part of the Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team, or MERIT, a countywide task force.
