Darien Theft Suspect Later Charged With DUI: Cops

Man was seen behind the register before he was found to have stolen items, police say.

DARIEN, IL — A man believed to have shoplifted at a Darien store was caught shortly after when an officer spotted him driving erratically, police said.

About 1 a.m. Jan. 9, a clerk at Circle K, 8975 Lemont Road, reported retail theft to the police. The employee told officers that while going in the back to get some supplies, a man entered the store and went behind the register. Upon returning, the employee asked why the suspect was behind the register, according to a police report.

The man left in a red car with an unpaid bottle of wine and other items, while the employee took down the man's license plate number, police said. Less than 15 minutes later, an officer called to the store saw a red Ford Taurus driving north on Lemont, crossing the right boundary line, the report said. The license plate number matched.
