'Suspicious Package' At Walmart Turns Out To Be Discarded Display

The suspicious package was determined to be a store display sign thrown in the trash.

DARIEN, IL — The suspicious package found in the Walmart in Darien has been determined to be a store display that was thrown away. The store was evacuated Tuesday morning, and reopened after DuPage County Bomb Squad rendered the item safe, according to a release.

According to a release from the department, Darien Police responded to Walmart at 11:09 a.m. Tuesday regarding a suspicious package inside the store. The package was in a garbage can in the front of the store, police said. It was first noticed by an employee, and the package consisted of batteries, wires and flashing lights.

Based on the appearance and not knowing what the device was, the customers and employees in the store were evacuated and the area was secured, police said. Emergency personnel on the scene were able to get a visual of the item but were unable to determine what the device was.

According to the release, the DuPage County Bomb Squad was called to assist. Through the use of a robot they were able to remove the item and render it safe. Nobody was injured during the incident and the store was allowed to reopen.

After the area was declared safe, police and Walmart management were able to review store security
cameras and conduct an investigation, according to the release. The results of that investigation determined that the device was actually a store display aid that was no longer needed and was discarded into the trash.
