Darien Warning: Beware of 'Free' Roof Inspections

Several roofing firms applied for Darien solicitor's licenses Wednesday, the city said.

DARIEN, IL – Darien is warning residents to watch out for "free" roof inspection scams, which often pop up after storms.

In a news release, the city said the Better Business Bureau receives reports of shady roof inspections.

Darien has no active solicitor's licenses currently, the city said.

On Wednesday, several roofing companies applied for solicitor's licenses in Darien, according to the release. But the process can take up to 10 days

The city urged residents to call 911 if they are approached, so an officer can respond.

With such scams, a con artist may go on the roof and tear up shingles to resemble wind damage, according to the Better Business Bureau. Or the suspect may show photos of someone else's damaged roof.

"Homeowners should know how to recognize these cons and always hire businesses they can trust," the city said in its news release.
