Darien's Tips On Where To Direct Your Water

City wants your water to be directed to acceptable locations.

DARIEN, IL — The recent heavy rains in Darien serve as a reminder to check that your downspout and sump pump direct water to acceptable locations, according to a Facebook post from the city. The city said residents should take "steps to protect you, your neighbors and our systems from water damage."

Here are some tips from the city:

  • Downspouts and sump pumps must discharge at least five feet from the neighboring property.
  • Do not direct water from your sump pump into the sanitary sewer. Sanitary sewers are not designed to carry this additional load and may back up into your home if overwhelmed.
  • Do not direct water from your sump pump onto or across the sidewalk, as the water/hose create a hazard for pedestrians.
  • Do direct water from your sump pump onto your lawn, toward a tree, into a rain barrel or rain garden.
  • Do consider directing your sump pump line directly into the storm sewer if possible. Call 630-353-8105 for more information.
  • Property slope should direct water away from your home to prevent water seeping into your basement.
