DGC Sprouts: DuPage Sunflower Project and Community Science Inspiratio

Be inspired by our young presenter to plant sunflowers and learn how your children can contribute to community science in a big way!

Last month our DGC Sprouts group met to create unique miniature gardens with décor of their choice and wheat grass seeds. What fun! Check out their smiles and concentration as they worked on their creations in the photos on our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/darie...

We will welcome a special guest, Delanie, who as a 5th grader created the DuPage Sunflower Project. She will read her book, Lanie Plants a Sunflower. The theme of the book is meant to teach kids that you can have a small idea that can have a big impact!

Delanie will talk about her mission to plant a sunflower at every home In DuPage County to inspire happiness and save the planet. There will be sunflower seeds for all to take home to start spreading cheer and providing for pollinators, birds and other wildlife this summer.
We will continue the inspiration as the children learn about small ways they can contribute to make a big impact as well. We'll head outdoors to Bioblitz!

We will see what plants, insects, trees, or birds we can find in the St. John Learning Garden. We'll document the observations on iNaturalist and SEEK apps on their parent's devices. We will discuss how their small contributions will help the community scientists on those sites track local flora and fauna. We will witness first-hand how they can make a difference as their sightings become data that help scientists and land managers better understand and protect nature for all of us.

We hope that the families will continue learning and exploring by joining the City Nature Challenge (April 28 through May 1). Local nature lovers will be out in force that weekend to add observations in this annual "friendly competition" between urban areas around the world. Help put more dots on the local map that weekend!

Please download the iNaturalist app from the App Store or Google Play on your device prior to coming that evening so that our "DGC Experts" can help you with your observations. Hope to see you there!

NOTE:
All children need to be accompanied by an adult.
Dress for the weather as we'll be outdoors.
