DuPage County encourages businesses and organizations to participate in the Adopt-a-Trail program where they can help keep local trails free of debris.

“DuPage County is very proud of our trail system. In order to maintain a pleasant user experience, the Adopt-a-Trail program allows groups of all ages to participate in beautifying our trail system,” said DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin.

The Adopt-a-Trail program provides an opportunity for civic or private interest groups to adopt segments of the Illinois Prairie Path and Great Western Trail for litter collection. The trails program is similar to the long-standing Adopt-a-Highway Program that is facilitated through the County’s Division of Transportation.

County Board member Sean Noonan, who serves on the Trails Maintenance Task Force, said the Adopt-a-Trail program serves as an ideal alternative to the highway program for youth groups to perform community service in a safer environment.

“The program is a great opportunity for residents to take ownership of the very trails that pass through their neighborhoods. Volunteers can help pick up litter, clear culverts of debris and help ensure the trails are in good condition for biking, walking and other activities,” said Noonan.

Each group will be assigned on average a 1-mile stretch of the trail. Volunteers are required to work four times a year between March and November. The County will provide work materials, such as gloves, safety vests and garbage bags, in addition to informational and warning signs to alert the public that work crews are on the trail.
