Fugitive Caught, DUIs: Darien Police

Man who twice drives away from Darien officers is apprehended, police say.

DARIEN, IL — In the last few days, Darien police said they handled cases involving a chase, DUIs and a driver who failed to yield for an ambulance. Here is information from the latest Darien police reports:

  • About 3 a.m. Sunday, an officer saw a car speeding 55 mph in a 40-mph zone on southbound Cass Avenue. But the driver did not stop and merged onto northbound Interstate 55, increasing in speed to more than 100 mph. The officer ended the pursuit. About 4:30 a.m., another Darien officer saw the same car traveling north on Lemont. The driver stopped, but then drove off and entered the driveway of a house in the 7900 block of Windsor Court. The driver was identified as James Smith, 37, of Joliet, who was charged with felony aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer. He was also arrested on a Will County warrant on a charge of failure to appear in court. He was unable to post bond and was taken to the DuPage County Jail.
  • An officer saw an ambulance with its lights on about 1:30 a.m. Nov. 17 in the 7900 block of Lemont Road. The officer then saw a car speeding on Lemont abruptly brake as it passed the police car and failed to yield to the ambulance. The officer pulled over the driver, identified as Andrew Berberich, 19, of Clarendon Hills, who was cited on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of tobacco by a minor. He was released and given a date to appear in court.
  • Mohammed Sadeq, 23, of Joliet, was cited at 2 a.m. Nov. 18 at Shell gas station, 8975 Lemont Road, on charges of possession of marijuana and improper display of license plates.
  • Eleen Vargas, 31, of Lyons, was arrested shortly before midnight Friday on charges of DUI, improper lane usage, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and operating a motor vehicle while using an electronic device. She was released and given a date to appear in court.
  • Terrance Ivy, 23, of Bolingbrook, was arrested about 3:30 a.m. Saturday on Lemont Road on charges of DUI, possession of marijuana by a driver, illegal transportation of alcohol and disobeying a traffic control device. He was released and given a date to appear in court.
