Here We Go Again: County Encourages Residents to Prepare for Excessive Heat

As temperatures are expected to reach the high 90s and even the 100s through the remainder of the week, DuPage County encourages residents to take additional steps to stay safe during the holiday.

“The Fourth of July is a great time to visit with friends and family,” said Dan Cronin, chairman of the DuPage County Board. “However, with heat indices expected to rise above 100 degrees, it can quickly turn dangerous. Under those conditions, heat exhaustion or heat stroke can occur quickly if you are not properly hydrated or become overheated,”

Cronin recommends residents follow these tips to stay safe in the summer heat:

• Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
• Stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. While working outside, take frequent breaks and use the “buddy system.”
• Check on children, the elderly and those with functional needs to make sure they're staying safe.
• Ensure that pets have enough water and shade.
• Review the heat safety tips and suggestions on this checklist from the American Red Cross.

In addition, be familiar with nearby DuPage County cooling sites. Since portions of the county still may not have power due to Sunday’s severe thunderstorm, residents should call the facility first to make sure it is open.
