Although the rules of the road clearly identify a driver’s responsibility at a stop intersection, traffic habits show that drivers commonly resort to what is referred to as a “rolling stop.” Rolling through stop signs is unsafe and often times results in a crash.
The program is effective in modifying behavior through education and enforcement.

The first phase of this program includes education and awareness. For a predetermined period of time, officers will have discretion to issue warnings for perceived unintentional violations along with an educational pamphlet outlining the seriousness of the violation.
Additional information about stop violations will be posted online to the village website, local newspapers, along with a video for the village cable access channel.
The second phase of this program includes strict enforcement. Violators will be given citations for rolling stop violations, along with an educational pamphlet that identifies the legal requirements for motorists to obey at stop intersections.
The police department will prioritize locations with high crash volumes, intersections near schools or school travel routes and other intersections where unique circumstances increase violation rates. Intersections with low traffic volumes will also be staffed for enforcement in residential areas.
