House Explosion Risk In Darien: Reports Of 10 Flashes, Fires, Explosions After Gas Leak In Willowbrook
The petroleum gas leak affected 53 homes in Darien that are part of Flagg Creek Sanitary District.

DARIEN, IL — UPDATE: A Willowbrook gas leak that has caused fumes to permeate into part's of Darien's sewer system is responsible for 10 "flashes, and/or explosions and fires" in the area. DuPage County Sheriff's Office shared the update from the Village of Westmont on its Facebook page late Friday after many residents chose to leave their homes due to a noxious odor and the risk of explosion.
The Chicago Red Cross opened a shelter at Hinsdale South Friday for families who are at risk of a house explosion after petroleum gas leaked into the sewer of Flagg Creek Sanitary System. Those impacted by the gas leak were able to stay at Hinsdale South High School after 10 p.m. Friday.
Officials in Willowbrook stated the gas fumes will eventually dissipate as time passes. If you are in an affected home and choose to remain there, officials recommend opening a window for ventilation and turning off furnaces and dryers as a precautionary measure.

Fire crews have been investigating the gas leak since Friday morning, when an explosion caused a fire in a laundry room at Knolls Complex in Willowbrook.

The risk of house explosions in the Flagg Creek Sanitary System is high, Darien officials warn, urging residents in this area not to turn on any electronic devices or gas components in their homes. A petroleum gas leak at the Speedway gas station near 63rd and Cass caused fumes to leak into the sewer system, triggering home explosions in Willowbrook.

Officials say this affects 53 homes in Darien that are located in the Flagg Creek Sanitary System. Homes in the DuPage County Sanitary System will not be affected, according to city officials.
