DARIEN, IL — In the last week of November, Darien police charged four people in separate incidents with retail theft.

In three of the cases, the suspects failed to scan items in the self-checkout aisle, attempting to avoid paying for them, police said. In the fourth instance, a suspect is accused of committing more traditional shoplifting.

Most Walmarts tend to be the busiest place in town, a gathering spot for residents. Along with that comes their issues.

In Darien, just how often do the police show up at Walmart, 2189 75th St.?

According to the department, police officers have responded to the store 309 times since the beginning of the year — 1.8 percent of the department's 16,962 total calls for service. In other words, one of every 50 calls on average is for Walmart.
