Ireland Dances into Darien

A taste of Ireland arrives this summer with a sample class in Irish step dancing class at the Darien Park District.

A taste of Ireland comes to Darien this summer with a sample Irish step dancing class.

Many of us are familiar with this popular Irish tradition made famous by the show Riverdance. The opportunity in Darien gives children a chance to learn about their Irish heritage or just have fun.

The class began its second session of the season Wednesday, and is held every week from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. until Aug 17. Previous experience is not required for this class geared toward teaching boys and girls ages 4-12 the basics of Irish dancing. The nine-week class costs $90 for residents and $95 for non-residents.

According to the , “Students will learn […] proper posture, correct foot placement, fundamental movements and the jig from champion dancer and instructor Katie Noonan.”

Noonan is certified from An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha—a mouthful that simply translates to The Irish Dancing Committee. The committee performs and teaches all around the world, aiming to preserve and promote the art of Irish dance.

Noonan has taught solo and team Irish dance classes for more than five years.

Although she started dancing to please her mom and learn a little bit about her heritage, it didn't take long for her to start begging to take more classes, she said.

"Irish dancing gave me so many gifts that have made me who I am today," Noonan said. "I hope to bring the same valuable friends, experiences and life skills to my students."

Noonan also teaches introductory to advanced classes at the Tooromeen School of Irish Dance. Classes are held nearby at the Pleasant Dale Park District Recreation Center in Burr Ridge (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and the Evergreen Racquet & Fitness in Evergreen Park (Thursdays).
