Imagine biting into a fresh, juicy peach - the sweet and slightly tart juices run down your mouth as you bask in its goodness.
Sure, you can buy them at the local store or at the farmer's market. But wouldn't it be fun and a great experience for the kids to pick your own?
You don't even have to drive too far - there's several orchards within two hours from Darien.

Using those Peaches
For beginners, slice them and top a salad. Add bits of prosciutto for a sweet-salty contrast.

How about fresh peach ice cream? Making your own ice cream is actually not difficult. I bought a Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker last year on CraigsList, as I wasn't sure how much I'd use it. As it turns out, homemade ice cream is a special treat and so much better than the store-bought versions. Peach is especially easy to make.
Try grilling peaches for a unique and healthy dessert. Cut them in chunks and skewer them. Douse them with some quality balsamic vinegar and grill till slightly soft.
Add variety to your grilled fish, chicken or pork with this delicious peach salsa. It's low in fat and calories and chockful of antioxidants. I prefer mine unsweetened, but you can add a bit of sugar or honey if you wish. Stevia is a natural plant-based sweetener.
Drink your peaches! Why not serve this refreshing Peach Bellini at your next party or even brunch? It's easy and a low-calorie alternative to fruity, sugar-laden margaritas and daquiris. And I love anything made with Prosecco! I prefer to leave the sugar out or to use Stevia.
Where to Go
Shafer Orchards, Baroda, Michigan - My husband's family has been going to this orchard located in southwest Michigan for many years. It's not too far from the Warren Dunes, about 90 miles northeast of the Chicago area.
Fruit Acre Farms, Coloma, Michigan - Check their Facebook page for up-to-date information on what is being harvested. This farm features an abundance of produce, including berries, blueberries, tomatoes and more. They are just northeast of St. Joseph, about 100 miles from Darien.
