Rate of Increase In Virus Cases Falls In Darien

DuPage County sees a higher percentage rate of increase than Darien.

DARIEN, IL — Darien's rate of weekly increase in coronavirus cases dropped to 7 percent last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department. The last two weekly increases were 9 percent.

As of Sunday, Darien's cases rose by 28 in the previous week, to 413. The number of those who are considered recovered is unavailable.

The number of local deaths from the coronavirus was eight as of Sunday since the pandemic's beginning, the same as it has been for weeks, according to the health department.

Darien's rate of increase of 7 percent was lower than DuPage County as a whole, which saw its caseload rise by 8 percent in the last week. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population, but only 1.8 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload.

As of Sunday, Darien had 19.1 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than most of its neighbors. The figure compares to 18.7 in La Grange Park, 21 in Western Springs, 23.3 in Clarendon Hills, 24.1 in DuPage County, 25 in Elmhurst, 25.9 in Hinsdale, 29 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands), 29.4 in suburban Cook County and 29.5 in Burr Ridge.

As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 374,256, up 9 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 9,505 state residents.

Nationally, 8.6 million people have caught the virus, up 6 percent from the week before. A total of 224,221 people have died from the virus in the United States.
