DARIEN, IL — Darien Mayor Joseph Marchese on Tuesday batted down online rumors that a local restaurant closed. It's very much open.

At a City Council meeting, the mayor said some residents had claimed about a month or so ago on the Nextdoor website that Carla's Red Hots in the Brookhaven Plaza had shut its doors.

"Carla's is open and operating," Marchese said. "I went in there the other day and bought a hot dog and some Italian ice. They were closed for a vacation. A lot of people went on Nextdoor and said that they were closed and that the city lost the business by not publicizing it. Well, none of that was true."

Marchese said the city has asked Carla's representatives previously to come before the council, so that officials could welcome the restaurant to the community. The invitation stands, he said.

A man answering the phone at Carla's on Wednesday afternoon couldn't immediately comment on the situation. He said he was busy taking care of customers.

The restaurant opened in 2020 at Brookhaven, which is at Plainfield Road and Cass Avenue.
