See Video Of Darien Officers Catching Suspect

Cops are seen on doorbell camera capturing the man. Neighbors App video has drawn more than 8,000 views.

DARIEN, IL — A video was posted online last week of Darien officers catching a shoplifting suspect in front of a nearby house. It was posted on the Neighbors App by Ring, drawing more than 8,000 views.

In a tweet Friday, the Darien Police Department said the video, taken by a Ring doorbell camera, was of its officers arresting a retail theft suspect from Walmart.

The department said the first officer did not use a gun, but displayed a Taser. The Taser was not deployed, but the suspect cooperated and was taken into custody without any problems, police said.

The 15-second video starts with the suspect's back to the camera on the front porch. An officer runs toward him yelling, "Get on the fricking ground."

The man plunges, saying, "I'm on the ground."

The officer then orders, "Do not f------ move."

Another officer runs through a garden, trying to avoid stepping on plants. The second officer tells the suspect, "Give me your other hand," then repeats in a louder voice, "Give me your other hand."

A third officer then shows up.

The video is labeled as taking place in Downers Grove, which is across 75th Street from Darien's Walmart.

The resident whose doorbell camera documented the incident said on the Neighbors App, "I was notified through Ring and family members that there was an incident and someone was arrested and they just so happened to do it in front of my house while I wasn't home."

On Tuesday, the police department provided more information about the incident to Darien Patch. About 3 p.m. Thursday, officers were called to Walmart about a retail theft in progress. According to a police report, the man loaded a cart with electronics and other items, then went to the celebrations aisle, placed the items into gift bags and walked out of the store.

When officers arrived, they told the suspect he was being detained. He ran away, police said.

He was charged with felony retail theft, felony possession of three or more credit cards, one count of resisting arrest and one count of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He also had an outstanding DuPage County warrant for failing to appear in court on a charge of possession of narcotic equipment, the report said.

Police did not release the man's name.
