Sheriff's Office Conducts Sex Offender Check On Halloween

The unit has 16 law enforcement agencies participating in this year's compliance checks with 250 offenders identified for checks.

DUPAGE COUNTY, IL — The DuPage County Sheriff's Office Sexual Predator Enforcement and Registration Unit will conduct its annual sex offender compliance check on Halloween. According to the sheriff's office, SPEAR began these checks in 2005 and have conducted them each year since.

The SPEAR unit was created in 2005 and is a multi-jurisdictional countywide team coordinated by the Sheriff's Office, to take a proactive approach to ensure that known sexual offenders comply with the requirements of the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act. The sheriff's office said the unit has 16 law enforcement agencies participating in this year’s compliance checks with 250 offenders identified for residential checks on Halloween.

“I hope residents visit our website to search their subdivisions to help prepare themselves and their children for a fun and festive Halloween. Please call the Sheriff’s Office you have any questions or concerns," Sheriff John Zaruba said in a release.

Illinois law prohibits child sex offenders from participating in a holiday events involving children under 18 years of age, including but not limited to, distributing candy or other items to children on Halloween.
