Suspect Justifies Darien Robbery: Cops

DARIEN, IL – A man who was arrested in the robbery of Carriage Greens Country Club says he was just getting money from the register at the request of his client named "Mark," Darien police said.
Then the man, identified as 34-year-old Sergio Calderon-Martinez of Chicago, admitted he was lying, police said.

Late the morning of July 12, Calderon-Martinez entered the country club, saying he was looking for Mark. An employee told him that no one named Mark worked there.
She led him to the pro shop. There, Calderon-Martinez yelled about picking up Mark and showed an employee an Uber-type app with Mark's name, according to the report.

Then Calderon-Martinez returned to the first area he visited, where he was inside the bar area for about a half hour, police said. The employee there continued cleaning.
Then the employee saw Calderon-Martinez behind the bar's register with the drawer open, police said. According to the report, the employee shouted for him to leave, prompting him to respond, "What are you gonna do?"
Calderon-Martinez lifted his shirt slightly, reaching toward his waistband, police said. The employee said she thought the man was going for a gun based on how he was reaching.
The employee then asked Calderon-Martinez to take the money and leave. He ran toward the door and left in a black Chevrolet Malibu, police said.
Through license plate readers, police found Calderon-Martinez in Chicago. He had taken $200 in cash and employees' checks, police said.
During his interview, Calderon-Martinez, who speaks Spanish, claimed he worked for Pace, a suburban bus agency, and was picking up Mark, police said. He acknowledged he took $20 in cash, a roll of coins, checks and a debit card, but said he was directed to do so by Mark, police said.
After the interview, Calderon-Martinez was asked to sit at the booking stool and make calls to friends or family. He then started to cry uncontrollably, police said.
Calderon-Martinez said he was stressed with his wife, children, mother and not having a job, according to the report. He said he wanted to be in jail to rest, police said.
He told officers he had no one to call because everyone wanted him in jail, the report said.
Calderon-Martinez was arrested on a charge of aggravated robbery. Police said he had no criminal history.
