Tornado Watch Issued In Darien: Thunderstorms Likely

CORRECTION: A tornado watch has been issued in Darien, not a warning. We apologize for the error.

DARIEN, IL — Batten down the hatches: a tornado watch has been issued for Darien and most of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, according to the National Weather Service. The watch lasts until 9 p.m. Monday.

All of DuPage County is included in the tornado watch, as are McHenry, Lake, DeKalb, Kane, Cook, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Will, and Kankakee counties in Illinois, and additional counties in northwest Indiana.

The National Weather Service said that isolated tornadoes are possible as several thunderstorms develop Monday afternoon, bringing gusts of up to 70 miles an hour, and hail in some locations.

There is a 100% chance of rain in Darien Monday afternoon and evening with severe thunderstorms possible, according to weather.com. Rainfall may reach up to one inch, and winds may reach up to 20 miles an hour.

Tuesday is set to be calmer, with clouds clearing up to sun later in the day. However, more thunderstorms are possible starting Wednesday afternoon, and rain is predicted for the rest of the week.

The National Weather Service recommends an emergency plan in the case of severe weather, including designating a smaller room inside away from windows. Keep supplies like flashlights, batteries, food, water, clothing, and shoe handy, and make sure you have plenty of ways to receive NWS updates.
