What Was That Loud Recording In Darien?

The announcement could apparently be heard over a wide area.

DARIEN, IL – Darien resident Heather Conroy's daughter woke her up early Friday morning. The girl thought she heard someone talking.

Then Conroy heard the same thing.

"It was super loud," Conroy said in an interview. "It went long enough for me to take a video."

It was apparently a recording that could be heard over a wide area.

The message went something like this: "May I have your attention. The following message is a recording. Please exit the building immediately. Follow the directions posted in your area to the nearest exit. Do not use the elevators."

Conroy, who lives near Holly and Wilcox avenues, thought the recording may have been coming from Downers Grove South High School.

"We got into the car and tried to pinpoint where it was coming from," she said. "We could still hear it when we were driving."

They could not find the source.

South spokeswoman Jill Browning said no drill had been conducted that day.

Darien Deputy Police Chief Jason Norton said he spoke with the patrol sergeant who was on shift and reviewed the calls for service. But he said he could find no reports about the recording.

Downers Grove police did not return a message for comment.
