1. Decatur man accused of setting house on fire, attacking hospital staff (wcia.com) — A Decatur man already facing prior charges is now accused of setting his home on fire and later assaulting multiple staff members at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Court records say the Aug. 20 blaze killed a dog and that the suspect allegedly doused himself in gasoline, with videos reportedly showing him threatening to ignite. He's been denied pretrial release and is due back in court September 10.
2. 'I want people to still feel safe': Decatur police chief addresses safety at Johns Hill Park (wandtv.com) — A recent shooting at Johns Hill Park left a young person hospitalized, but Decatur's police chief says two teen suspects are in custody and there's no ongoing threat to park visitors. Local mentor Shemuel Sanders, who knows the victim, is urging more support and supervision for youth in Decatur parks, as well as funding for programs that give teens safer options.
3. August 24 recap: Decatur and Macon County news you may have missed today (herald-review.com) — Today's Herald & Review digest pulls together several major Decatur and Macon County updates, from serious crime and crash investigations to high school football's Week 1 results. It also highlights youth sports opportunities like Little Hoopsters at the DISC, helping residents quickly catch up on what happened around town on August 24.
4. Jacardia Wright: Contract 40 time Injury Stats Wikipedia (sportsjone.com) — Decatur native and St. Teresa graduate Jacardia Wright is making his case for a bigger role with the Seattle Seahawks after a standout preseason performance. 5. Gov Pritzker signs plan allowing not-for-profit fire departments to receive state grants (dailydispatch.com) — Volunteer and not-for-profit fire departments across Illinois, including those serving smaller communities around Decatur, will soon be eligible for state grant funding under a new law signed by Gov. JB Pritzker. Starting Jan. 1, the State Fire Marshal can award grants to help these departments upgrade equipment and buildings, improving safety for residents.
