1. Macon County Health Department offers walk-in flu and COVID-19 vaccines (pantagraph.com) — Decatur-area residents can now walk into the Macon County Health Department for flu and COVID-19 vaccinations on weekdays, with both morning and afternoon hours available. Most insurance plans are accepted, and staff encourage people to stay current on shots to protect themselves, their families, and the wider community this respiratory illness season.
2. Decatur man pleads guilty to aggravated battery with machete (wcia.com) — A Decatur man has pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated battery after a June machete attack on North Monroe Street that left another man bleeding from the head. As part of a partial plea deal, prosecutors capped their sentencing recommendation at six years, with a judge set to decide the final sentence at a Nov. 12 hearing.
3. Rising gas prices strain local nonprofits (wandtv.com) — Rising gas prices are squeezing Decatur nonprofits, including Shemilah Outreach Center, which spends about $600 a week on fuel to transport 45 kids to and from its after-school program. With little outside funding, the director is paying for gas out of pocket to keep children safe, supervised, and fed instead of being home alone.
4. Powers Mansion looking for love, and weddings (herald-review.com) — Decatur's historic Powers Mansion is drawing crowds of curious visitors as volunteers guide tours through the aging, pre-restoration rooms. Neighbors and history buffs are getting a rare look inside the landmark while its owner and History of the Heartland explore options to restore and eventually host events like weddings in the space.
5. This week in weather (wandtv.com) — Decatur residents can expect a warm, increasingly humid stretch capped by a rainy, possibly stormy Thursday before cooler, drier weather settles in for the weekend. Showers may brush the area Wednesday morning, with Friday starting damp but turning brighter and noticeably cooler, leading into several chilly nights.
