6 Lake County Businesses Fail Tobacco Compliance Checks: Sheriff

LAKE COUNTY, IL — This month, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office concluded the second round of its 2026 tobacco compliance checks. Of the 71 establishments checked, six businesses failed.

The compliance checks, funded through a Tobacco Enforcement Grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services, were conducted at businesses that sell tobacco/nicotine products throughout Lake County.

The compliance checks are intended to ensure businesses selling tobacco/nicotine products display proper tobacco sale signage and are following appropriate identification procedures to ensure products are not sold to anyone under the age of 21.

"While even one failed compliance check is too many, I'm pleased the overwhelming majority of tobacco selling establishments refused to sell to underage buyers," Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg has said in the past regarding these efforts. "An important responsibility of selling tobacco or alcohol is ensuring those buying the product are of legal age, and we will continue conducting compliance checks to ensure businesses are following the law."

According to the Illinois Department of Revenue, businesses selling tobacco products—including e-cigarettes and alternative nicotine products—must be registered with the Illinois Department of Revenue and strictly prohibit sales to anyone under 21. Retailers must check IDs, prohibit self-service displays, and sell products in original, sealed packaging. Local municipalities may have additional, stricter licensing and distance.
