DEERFIELD, IL — Deerfield public works crews and contractors spent approximately 800 hours clearing storm debris and other hazards after two rounds of severe weather caused widespread damage and power outages across the village.
The storms moved through Deerfield on Monday, July 27, bringing heavy rain, hail, lightning and wind gusts exceeding 80 mph, according to the village.
A total of 2.69 inches of rain fell as trees and power lines came down throughout the area. More than 530,000 customers across ComEd's service territory lost electricity, including 6,068 customers in Deerfield.
Public Works crews began responding immediately one week ago and continued working throughout the week to remove downed trees, hanging limbs and obstructions from roads and sidewalks.
The village began a community-wide collection of storm debris from public parkways Wednesday and asked residents to place storm-related branches and other material at the curb.
By Friday, 10 village and contractor crews had completed two passes through Deerfield, accounting for approximately 800 hours of work.
ComEd deployed more than 2,300 workers, including mutual-aid crews from outside the region, to restore service across northern Illinois.
By Wednesday afternoon, electricity had been restored to more than 96 percent of affected Deerfield customers.
An additional outage occurred Thursday morning after a storm-damaged tree fell onto a power line behind a home on Chestnut Street. About 1,000 homes lost service in that incident.
ComEd crews restored power by approximately 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Only a few scattered outages remained later that afternoon, and power had been fully restored throughout Deerfield by 5:30 a.m. Friday, village officials said.
"The Village thanks residents for their patience, understanding and cooperation throughout the recovery," officials said in a statement.
