Brushwood Center, Partners Distributing 1.5K Backpacks In Lake County
The backpacks will be distributed to local youth and families, according to the Riverwoods-based organization.
RIVERWOODS, IL — The Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods, along with partners across Lake County, are teaming up to provide 1,500 free bilingual (English and Spanish) Nature Explorer Backpacks to local youth and family members.
According to officials, upcoming free to the public backpack distribution events include:
- Warren Newport Public Library’s Back to School Event
224 North O'Plaine Road, Gurnee, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 20 - Mano a Mano Family Resource Center, Mundelein High School, 500 W Hawley St., 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3
The program "aims to empower young people as change-makers to help address systemic environmental and health injustices in our communities," Brushwood Center said in a news release.

The backpacks include: activities, tools, and resources for coping with individual and community climate anxiety, a bilingual activity book, co-created with community artist Royce Galindo, that highlights sites of healing in Lake County
The project's engagement and impact has grown every year, from 500 backpacks distributed in 2020 to 1,500 backpacks distributed in 2024. Learn more here.
