Deerfield Baseball Team HR Derby for Cubs Star's Charity

More than $1,600 raised for cancer research and providing support to children and their families battling the disease

Recently, the Deerfield Warriors 10 and under Gray Boys Travel Team took part in what was billed as the 1st Annual Skipper’s Classic. With the emcee of the night Deerfield resident Sam Schwartz providing music and announcements, the night started off with a Home Run Derby. Contestants included players, siblings and parents. Deerfield's own Noah Cohen won the players portion, Amy Carletti won the women’s portion and Michael “Skipper” Felish took home the crown in the men’s portion. Overall, the contestants hit 85 home runs.

With donations of $15 for each home run going to the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation, the team raised $1,275 during the first half of the night. With other contributions from The Merry Memory Company, J&A Freight Systems, DYBA and other donors, the team will have raised over $1,600 in providing funds for cancer research and providing support to children and their families battling the disease.

Following the Home Run Derby and a catered dinner from Dear Frank’s, the group finished the night with a 4-inning softball game under the lights at Jewett 2. The night capped off a successful season for the Warriors, winning their last 3 out of 4 games. The standout moment of the spring and summer was tournament championship during Memorial Day weekend in Buffalo Grove.
