Deerfield Wrestling Nation Strives Down State

Deerfield Wrestling Nation makes noise down state

We just finished another outstanding year of Wrestling at all levels in the Deerfield Wrestling Nation (DWN). I will break down our accomplishments at each level. The DWN had 21 total state qualifiers at our respective state tournaments with 8 state placers. Special thanks to all the coaches at each level who work tirelessly at every level to keep our tradition of success going. There is a lot of help behind the scenes. Special thanks to all junior high coaches and volunteers. We can’t do it without you!

Also a very special THANK YOU to all the parents for your support.

High School:

This is our second year in a row with 6 state qualifiers. We also have placed wrestlers in state 3 years in a row and 5 out of the last 7 years.

We also won Regionals for the second year in a row, qualifying our team for the team sectionals. Unfortunately, we were a little banged up and lost to a tough team from Rockton Hononegah to qualify for team state again. Deerfield finished the season ranked 7th in state in 3A (large school division). We produced 5 Regional champs this year: Holden Heller, Nick Kupets, Kenny Kerstein, Andrew Mehrholz, and Sage Heller. Sectional Champions: Holden Heller, Kenny Kerstein, and Andrew Mehrholz.

Our Varsity, JV, and Freshmen wrestling teams repeated as conference champions. Our lower levels continue to produce competitive varsity wrestlers. For the varsity wrestling team this is the 8th Conference Championship in a row. In addition, the wrestlers won the entire 12 team CSL tournament. I am also very proud that a Deerfield Wrestler has been voted by the coaches as the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the CSL Conference for the North Division for 9 out of the last 10 years and 8 years in a row. This year the honor goes to 170 pound 2x state qualifier, 2x conference champion, and 2nd in state, Sage Heller.

2009 - Andrew Rixon (189) 2x SQ

2015 - Andrew Mehrholz (138) 4x SQ, 3rd in state, 5th in state
2016 - Sage Heller (170) 3x SQ and 2nd in state

This year we had 4 Conference Champions...

Holden Heller (So)

Kyle Clough (Jr) 3x

Nick Kupets (Sr) 2x

Sage Heller (Sr) 2x

Even though this was by far our toughest schedule we were still able to finish the season with a 26-4 record. We finished the season ranked 7th in state.
