Deerfield's Alex Gold Competes at Track & Field Nationals

Mikey Hull also raced the mile in the Special Olympics and set a personal record.

On Saturday June 15, Alex Gold competed in the Full 2 mile at the New Balance Track & Field National Championships at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro NC.

This was to be the last race for Alex as a Deerfield Warrior as a competing representative for the DFDC.  His High School time capsule ended the way it should on an elite stage against the 28 best runners in the nation and he did not disappoint as he raced to 16th place in the nation with a 9:20.78 which converts to a 9:17.53 3200m time. That is an impressive effort considering the heat and humidity of North Carolina and the field of competition.

Alex’s race plan was excellent as he went out in a 4:35 and continued to push as he picked off and passed several runners in the last 800. His effort places him on the 3rd Team All American list and this is the 1st All American for the DFDC since 1977 when Tom Stevens earned 1st Team All American honors in the mile.

A DFDC legend leaves now us but as we have always said “Tradition is reinvented every year.”  Alex would be the 1st one to challenge any DFDC runner to step up and beat his efforts and times.  The coaches would like to thank him for raising the training standards and Team expectations in every way in his time at Deerfield.  His Time Capsule is so full with so many key motivating experiences.  We will ALL miss Alex Gold! Congrats on a Legendary DFDC career.

One other DFDC runner was also competing Saturday as Mikey Hull raced the mile in the Special Olympics in Normal, Illinois.  Mike Placed 3rd and earned a Bronze medal with a time of 8:16 and a personal record!  Mike has improved by over 3 minutes in his mile time and loves to run.  It’s amazing to think that the DFDC ends 2013 with an All American and a Special Olympian! Congrats Mikey!
