District 113 Names Dr. Daryl Herrick Interim Superintendent

Choice to lead Deerfield and Highland Park High Schools next year is a veteran Superintendent from Wisconsin.

Township High School District 113 has named Dr. Daryl Herrick as its interim superintendent of schools for the 2015-16 school year. He will succeed George Fornero, who is retiring on June 30.

“Dr. Herrick has a proven track record of working collaboratively with staff, students, parents and community members to successfully improve already high-achieving schools, with unwavering commitment to providing the best possible experience for students,” said Marjie Sandlow, president of the board of education, which approved Herrick’s hire Monday night.

Herrick retired in 2013 from Cedarburg School District in Wisconsin, where he spent 12 years as Superintendent of Schools. According to a District 113 release, during Herrick’s tenure at Cedarburg, accomplishments included leading the development of a stakeholder-driven strategic plan for the school district, developing a professional mentor system for teachers in their first three years in the district, creating an administrative professional development program, expanding school facilities, and fostering two-way communication and engagement opportunities.

In 2012-13, Cedarburg High School was placed on the College Board’s third annual AP Honor Roll, and was recognized by Newsweek Magazine as one of America’s best public high schools and the second best high school in Wisconsin.

Since 2013, Herrick has served as an associate/independent contractor for Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates, District 113’s search firm. The district’s previous selection to replace Fornero on a permanent basis was Laurie Kimbrel, a school superintendent in California who resigned before starting her job at District 113 partly due to criticism she received from having ties to the same firm.

“It is truly an honor to be named the interim superintendent for District 113, said Herrick. “Highland Park High School and Deerfield High School are extremely high performing, and the school district’s outstanding success is the result of focused and talented students, highly qualified staff, engaged, supportive parents and a community that highly values its schools.”

He added it’s his intent to be “an active, engaged leader who promotes collaborative processes to advance learning for staff and students and contributes to a professional, positive and student-centered culture.”

The District will continue to seek a permanent replacement for current Superintendent George Fornero beginning at the start of the next school year.
