DEERFIELD, IL — Trick-or-treaters and their families can take a break from collecting candy Saturday for a free Chicago-style hot dog as a neighborhood Halloween tradition returns for its 24th consecutive year.
Opem Tax Advocates, Inc. and the Law Office of Steven A. Leahy, P.C. will host the giveaway Oct. 31 on Half Day Road, across from Bannockburn Green Shopping Center.
The stand opens at 4 p.m. and will serve until 10 p.m. or until the hot dogs run out. Trick-or-treaters, parents and neighbors are invited to stop by.

The menu features Vienna Beef hot dogs on steamed buns, with mustard, relish, diced onions, tomatoes, pickles, sport peppers and celery salt. Plain hot dogs will also be available, and organizers say ketchup is welcome, too.
The giveaway began as a way to welcome neighborhood families and has grown into a tradition spanning generations, according to the hosts. Some children who once visited in costume now bring children of their own.
