Go Green Deerfield Announces Tree Canopy Challenge

Pledge to Plant 2500 Trees by 2025 in Deerfield

Go Green Deerfield announces #TreeCanopyChallenge to plant 2500 trees in the community over six years. #TreeCanopyChallenge, #2500Treesby2025 will help compensate for the devastating loss of 4,300 trees between 2012 and 2018 caused by emerald ash borer and Dutch elm disease.

The #TreeCanopyChallenge campaign kicks off August 31st. at the Deerfield Farmers Market. Go Green Deerfield will be distributing FREE saplings donated by the Park District to the first forty families to sign the pledge. We will also take last minute applications for the Village’s 50/50 parkway tree program and will be promoting the Sustainability Commission’s upcoming tree walk.

Residents own 80% of the land available in Deerfield for increasing tree canopy. So, it is natural for residents to take the lead in replacing our tree canopy. We believe that this is a totally achievable undertaking that will make a difference in our community.

#2500Treesby2025 not only draws attention to the problem, it provides residents with a mechanism to begin to remedy the ongoing loss of tree canopy.

Trees increase property values, intercept stormwater and reduce flooding, store carbon dioxide, remove pollutants, and save household energy. Our community continues to lose trees to disease and development without actively replenishing those trees, let alone increasing this valuable resource.
