Jewel-Osco Will Move To Larger Space in Deerbrook Mall

Agreement between grocer, village and Deerbrook also paces way for wholesale store to open at south end of mall.

Jewel-Osco will move into a new, larger building in the Deerbrook Mall once all village approvals on an agreement between the grocer, village and Mall ownership are obtained.

The agreement is to replace the existing 46,000-square-foot store with a 61,700-square-foot market and to provide sales tax incentives for Jewel in return for Jewel to sign a 10-year lease and allow a wholesale club open at the south end of the center, according to the Deerfield Review.

Village Manager Kent Street says Jewel allowing a Costco or Sam’s Club to open at the former Wonder! site is “huge.”

“The use by Costco or Sam’s Club will help with the retrofitting of the mall,” Street said.

The new store will be built immediately south of the existing one in a space that is currently vacant. The current Jewel will then be demolished, with plans for a drive-thru prescription pickup for Jewel and three smaller buildings housing other retailers to take shape in its place.

Once approvals are obtained, the project to replace to current Jewel with the new one should take approximately 63 weeks.
