Lane Reductions Coming To Deerfield, Sanders Road Bridges Over Tri-State

DEERFIELD, IL — Drivers who use Deerfield Road and Sanders Road over the Tri-State Tollway should prepare for lane reductions beginning next week as part of Illinois Tollway bridge repairs.

Beginning Monday, Aug. 17, Deerfield Road over I-94 is scheduled to be reduced to one lane in each direction. One lane in each direction on I-94 is also expected to close.

The pedestrian path along Deerfield Road over I-94 will remain open during construction.

A day later, beginning Tuesday, Aug. 18, Sanders Road over I-294 is scheduled to be reduced to one lane in each direction. One lane in each direction on I-294 will also close.

The lane reductions are expected to remain in place into the fall. All work is weather dependent.

What Work Is Being Done

The Illinois Tollway said work at the Deerfield Road and Sanders Road bridges includes median pier repairs, bridge deck and joint work, and drainage improvements.

Electronic message boards and construction signs are being used to alert drivers to traffic shifts and closures.

The work is part of a larger 2026 repair program on the North Tri-State Tollway.

Other locations scheduled for work include the Waukegan Road Bridge and Deerfield Road Bridge over I-94; the I-94 mainline bridge over U.S. Route 41; the Willow Road and Sanders Road bridges over I-294; and I-294 bridges over the Union Pacific Railroad, Dempster Street and Touhy Avenue.

The Tollway said the broader work includes bridge-joint cleaning and repairs, structural concrete repairs and drainage-system cleaning, with completion scheduled this year.

Part Of $2 Billion Capital Plan

The North Tri-State repairs are part of the Illinois Tollway's seven-year, $2 billion Bridging the Future capital plan.

The program, approved by the Tollway Board of Directors in December 2024, is intended to continue infrastructure improvements between the agency's current and next long-term capital programs.

The Deerfield and Northbrook work is being coordinated with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Cook County, Lake County, Union Pacific Railroad, the Village of Northbrook and local police and fire departments.

Work Zone Reminder

The Tollway reminded motorists that construction-zone speed limits remain in effect around the clock and that drivers should watch for changing traffic patterns.

Motorists are also required under Illinois' Move Over Law to change lanes when possible, or slow down and proceed cautiously, when approaching vehicles stopped along the road with hazard or emergency lights activated.
