Mariano's To Open Bannockburn Location

Opening day is set for Oct. 10 for the new grocery store at Waukegan and Half Day roads.

BANNOCKBURN, IL — A new Mariano's grocery store is opening up at Waukegan and Half Day roads next month, and the company says it plans to emphasize organic foods at the Bannockburn location, the Deerfield Review reports. The new location will mean there are three major grocery stores within an area of less than two miles, including nearby Heinen's Grocery Store in the Bannockburn Green Shopping Center at the same intersection and the Lake Forest Sunset Foods up Waukegan Road.

When it opens Oct. 10, the new Mariano's will include a Starbucks cafe, an organic salad bar, an expanded kosher department, fresh squeezed juices, artisan gelato, a large wine and cheese selection (with design-your-own cheese boards) and more choice of flowers than other area stores, the strategic brand development director of the Mariano's told the paper.

At a village board meeting last April, Heinen's co-president suggested there was not enough business in the area to support all three grocery stores, but he said the store has no plans on closing, the Deerfield Review reported.

Both Mariano's parent company, Kroger, and Heinen's are based in Ohio. Sunset Foods is headquartered in Highland Park.
