Most Walgreens Stores Closing On Thanksgiving For First Time Ever

DEERFIELD, IL — Saying it wants to "give time back to its workforce," the parent company of Walgreens announced Thursday it is closing most locations on Thanksgiving Day for the first time ever. But Walgreens Boots Alliance, headquartered in Deerfield, said nearly all 700 Walgreens 24-hour locations will remain open on Nov. 23.

"We have consistently heard from our team members — who are the face of Walgreens — that time off is a meaningful way for us to demonstrate we value them," Tracey D. Brown, EVP, president Walgreens retail and chief customer officer, said in a news release. "We heard them, are committed to listening to their feedback and are dedicated to doing what is right for them. We hope they can enjoy the holiday and spend time with their loved ones."

WBA, headquartered at 108 Wilmot Road, oversees 9,277 Walgreens and Duane Reade stores in the U.S.

Brown said the decision to keep most 24-hour locations open is because the stores are "essential in delivering care to their communities and serve as a critical destination for healthcare services, including prescription access, pharmacist advice and medication management."

In addition, a few Walgreens distribution centers and other sites will also be open on Thanksgiving, including supply chain and centralized teams.

Stores closed on Thanksgiving Day will operate regular posted hours on Wednesday, Nov. 22, as well as Friday, Nov. 24, according to the news release. Customers are encouraged to check their local store and pharmacy hours using the Walgreens store locator.
