Police Prepare For Back To School Safety Campaign

The Deerfield Police Department wants to ensure a safe start to the school year next week.

DEERFIELD, IL — The school year starts Monday at most local schools, including Deerfield District 109 and Township High School District 113. To coincide with the first day of school, the Deerfield Police Department announced a campaign to increase traffic safety in and around schools in Deerfield. Police said they would pursue a two-pronged approach of both education and enforcement.

Police asked all students and parents to stay focused on staying safe on the road throughout the school year. The department promised increased enforcement from unmarked vehicles and police bikes in school zones to enforce parking regulations and traffic laws in and around Deerfield schools.

  • Pay attention to school bus stop arms
  • Pay attention to parking restrictions around schools and don't park in intersections
  • Watch your speed and obey all stop signs and red lights and
  • Never use a handheld cell phone while driving.

For those interested in taking personal responsibility for traffic safety in school areas on a part-time basis, the village is hiring a crossing guard for an hour each in the morning and afternoon for a salary of about $17 an hour.
