Ryerson Reads: Reading into Nature

RIVERWOODS, IL –Since 2004, members of Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods' book and lecture club, Ryerson Reads, have poured over the pages of 52 different books in the environmental literature genre. The book discussions, led by Lake Forest College Professor of English, Dr. Ben Goluboff, are fun while, at the same time, in-depth and academic. Ryerson Reads is as much a place for laughter as it is for discourse and this great balance, set inside historic Brushwood Center with the pristine backdrop of Ryerson Woods, makes Ryerson Reads a special way to connect with nature.

For the 2016-17 season, Ryerson Reads discussed H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald, Man and Nature by David Lowenthal, The Seed Underground by Janisse Ray, and Half-Earth by Edward O. Wilson. The literature covered in Ryerson Reads focuses on a combination of art, nature, and wellbeing--key components of Brushwood Center's mission as a nonprofit organization to "promote the importance of nature for nurturing personal and community wellbeing, cultivating creativity, and inspiring learning."

With the conclusion of Ryerson Reads' 2016-2017 season, Brushwood Center is excited to begin working to incorporate new elements to the program that will both keep with the tradition of this local literary staple as well as extend it's impact in the community.
