South Park 5th-Graders Finish 4th At STEAM Competition In Kansas City
The Deerfield students were among 30 teams participating in the elementary level engineering challenge.

DEERFIELD, IL — For "99 Cents," a team of fifth-grade South Park Elementary School students, a recent trip to Kansas City, Missouri, proved to be rewarding. The students finished fourth place among 30 teams participating in the Elementary Level engineering challenge at Destination Imagination’s Global Finals tournament.
The team’s 1.3 ounce (37.1 gram) structure made of only wood and glue supported a nearly three-foot tall stack of weight plates totaling 935 pounds. The quartet consisted of Emma Wang, William Xia, Vincent Leuthner and Frank Gettleson. "99 Cents" won first place at the Illinois “affiliate” (state-level) DI tournament in DeKalb on April 2.
A team from Caruso Middle School finished in fourth place at the Middle Level in the engineering challenge.
